Supporting families

The best way to care for children at risk of losing parental care is to help them and their families through the hardest times. Our family strengthening programmes provide support to disadvantaged and vulnerable families around the world. From our village communities in 125 countries, we work directly with families in the surrounding areas. Together with local people and organisations, we identify needs and provide practical and emotional support to help parents and caregivers look after their children.
Our family strengthening programmes are specifically targeted to the needs of each community and family to help prevent crises that lead to family breakdown and child abandonment.

Our programmes offer:

  • Help with children’s school fees, uniforms and materials
  • Help for parents to establish a steady income and stable home
  • Training in parenting skills and household management
  • Learning about children’s rights
  • Family counselling
In 2016, SOS Children’s Villages helped more than 490,000 people – or 90,000 families – through 550 family strengthening programmes worldwide.
