Disaster and conflict

In situations of war and disaster, children need specific protection and care. With our established global infrastructure, network of partners and trusted recognition as a reliable partner in quality care, we launch emergency response programmes for children and families who need urgent assistance. Our emergency response teams are expert in protecting children and their families in times of war and chaos, ensuring basic and psychological needs are met. We also work to strengthen and reunite families, facilitate integration for those arriving in new regions and countries, ensure education and training can continue, and keep families in touch.

Last year we supported 300,000 vulnerable children and families in more than 30 emergency situations. With your help we can protect children from malnutrition, disease, long-term trauma and trafficking.

Emergency crises are increasingly frequent and severe, and in many countries they occur as a result of political instability, widespread poverty, weak state institutions and the increasing effects of climate change.

Children are particularly vulnerable during humanitarian emergencies. In such situations, we put the protection of children and their families at the centre of our activities.

These extreme circumstances impact family and community life, putting children at an increased risk of malnutrition, disease, exploitation and long-term trauma.

We specialise in protection and care of children, including care for unaccompanied and separated children, interim care centres for children, family reunification, child friendly spaces, and psychological and social support.

SOS Children’s Villages' emergency programmes are guided by the principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence. Learn more about our approach in our Emergency Policy.
