World Orphan Week – February 6 2018

Cambridge to mark World Orphan Week with a series of award-winning films

SOS Children’s Villages UK (SOSUK) – the world’s largest charity caring for orphaned and abandoned children – has once again teamed up with the Arts Picturehouse in Cambridge to screen award-winning short films this Wednesday from 9pm.

The collaboration is part of World Orphan Week, which aims to highlight the many issues faced by millions of children worldwide. With an orphan being created somewhere every 2 seconds, the work of SOS Children’s Villages UK is more important than ever to raise donations for their life-changing work.

“We are delighted to be partnering with the Picturehouse Cinemas once again during World Orphan Week to help raise vital funds for the millions of orphaned and abandoned children worldwide. Following the success of our Kids’ Club screening on Saturday, this Wednesday will provide opportunity for adults to understand some of the many complex and life-shattering issues faced by millions of children across the world and to empower communities to take action with SOSUK to make a real difference."

Alison Wallace, CEO of SOSUK

Of the seven films being screened on Wednesday is ‘A Million Waves’ which shows the life-changing effects of the 2014 Ebola Crisis, and ‘The Full Story’ which won the award for Best Short Film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

SOSUK works through its sister organisations worldwide to provide parentless children with a loving and secure home, as well as access to quality education and healthcare. SOSUK provides support to families affected by poverty, conflict, and illness – helping them stay together as a family and preventing children from being abandoned.

The Short Films event is being held from 9pm on Wednesday 7th February at the Arts Picturehouse on St Andrew’s Street, Cambridge.
